Meet Tommy

Tommy Smith is a proud sixth generation South Carolinian, born and raised in Greenville County. He’s a former deputy who patrolled Greenville County, protected presidents, helped New York City through the dark days after 9/11 and became deputy director of a premier American law enforcement agency.

He’s ready to restore public trust in his beloved Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Tommy graduated from Wade Hampton High School, Greenville Technical College and from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

He also holds Master's degrees from The University of Alabama and Johns Hopkins University.

For more than three decades he has led impressive careers in both local law enforcement and the U.S. Secret Service. In 1978 he began working as a dispatcher for the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, followed by eight years as a uniformed deputy, Sergeant, and Lieutenant.

He joined the Secret Service in 1986 and went on to serve in numerous high-level capacities including assistant to the Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protection Division and deputy director of the USSS. In the latter role, Tommy was responsible for approximately 7,000 personnel and a $1.7 billion budget. Tommy also served as Senior Adviser with the Department of Homeland Security, overseeing such matters as cybersecurity and transnational organized crime.

As recognition for his work, Tommy has received numerous merit citations and public service and law enforcement awards. These include the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service; the Department of Homeland Security Secretary's Silver Medal; and the Secretary's Award of Excellence. He was also honored with awards from the New York's Finest Foundation and the American Society of Industrial Security.

Tommy counts his public service as a blessing, and credits the six generations that came before him.

His family included a city policeman, mill workers and farmers, all of whom proudly served and worked in Greenville. He now is an independent consultant specializing in business development in security, cybersecurity, privacy and identity space.

As a proven leader in law enforcement, Tommy is ready to serve as your next Sheriff. Accountability, ethics, and transparency are values reflected throughout his life's work. He is dedicated to his community and wants to give back to the neighbors, friends and family who have given so much to him.

In the wake of troubling recent events at the Sheriff's Office, Tommy knows that the well-being of the citizens of Greenville must always be the top priority. When he is elected, he will once again make GCSO the preeminent law enforcement agency in South Carolina.
